Kansas City, MO - Avila freshman Jeremi Barnes will make history on Saturday when he competes in the men's triple jump at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.

Barnes, a Raytown, Mo. native, became the first Eagle ever to qualify for the Indoor National Championships when he hit the qualifying standard at the Heart Indoor Championships back on Feb. 12th. Barnes earned Second Team All-Heart with a jump of 14.40m, and will be the first Eagle to represent Avila at the National Championship in indoor.

"First, I would like to give the glory to God, without him I wouldn't be where I am today," Barnes said. "It is an honor to be the first Eagle to qualify for the Indoor National Championships. I can't thank my coaches, family and my teammates enough for believing in me and pushing me to be a better student-athlete."

Barnes has had a phenomenal freshman campaign, earning seven top-five finishes on the season, including a victory in the Triple Jump at the Central College Dutch Athletics Classic.

Barnes is scheduled to compete in the Triple Jump at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday on the David E. Walker Track at Gentry Field on the campus of East Tennessee State University. Barnes is one of 25 individuals to qualify for the Triple Jump, including three other members from the Heart: Cedric Shell, Michael Lewis and Isaac Zitterkopf.

Barnes will enter the event with the eighth-best jump in the nation at 14.40m, and he will have a great chance to become Avila's first All-American in the event with a strong showing.
