Kansas City, MO - The sixth annual Purple-White Spring Game is set for 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at The Z, with the Eagle Football Alumni Game scheduled to begin prior to the game at 10 a.m.

The Purple-White Spring Game gives the players a chance to showcase their talents for the coaching staff in a controlled game setting, and it will also allow coaches to evaluate their current team ahead of the summer. The game also gives fans a chance to view the Eagles in a more intimate setting on the field, as well as the chance to see Coach Hicks in his first game action.

Saturday's order of events will begin with the Eagle Football Alumni Game at 10 a.m. on the field, followed by team warmups at 11 a.m. and then the Purple-White game at 11:30 a.m.

Despite a tough season in 2016, buzz around the Avila football program has been growing since the announcement that Eric Hicks had been promoted to head coach. Hicks, a former Kansas City Chief and ten year NFL veteran, spent the 2016 as the defensive line coach for the Eagles before being named Avila's new head coach on April 21st. Hicks is replacing former head coach Justin Berna, who left the program to take over as head coach of the West Hills College in Coalinga, California, just fifteen miles from his hometown.

One of the first orders of business for Hicks was setting his coaching staff. He appointed former Eagle and longtime assistant Marc Benavidez to Offensive Coordinator and also promoted defensive backs coach Andre' Pope to Defensive Coordinator. Hicks also promoted former Chiefs teammate Derrick Alexander to a full time position within the program. Alexander was Avila's wide receivers coach last season. Coach Benavidez will also retain his role as recruiting coordinator and offensive line coach, and Hicks will still coach the defensive line.

Admission to Saturday's Purple-White Spring Game is free for all, and fans are welcome to be down on the turf during the day, just not within 15 yards of the playing field.

Avila kicks off their regular season on August 26th when they travel to take on the Peru State Bobcats for a 12 p.m. kickoff. Avila's first home game of the season will be on September 9th at noon against Benedictine.
