St. Joseph, MO - The Eagles fell in a heartbreaker in the semifinals of the Heart Tournament on Friday, dropping their winner's bracket game to Evangel, 5-4 in eight innings.

The Eagles (2-1 in Tournament) fell behind 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning to the Crusaders (3-0 in Tournament), but roared back with 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.

The score remained the same until the eighth inning when Evangel plated a run to take a 5-4 lead, and the Eagles were unable to tie the game as Abby King bounced into a rare double play to end the game.

With the loss, the Eagles will now need to win three games on Saturday, with their first game coming at 11 a.m. against MidAmerica Nazarene. The winner of that game will need to defeat Evangel twice to claim the Heart Championship and an automatic bid into the NAIA World Series Opening Round.

The Eagles had multiple opportunities to take the lead after they tied the game in the fourth inning, but it just was not in the cards as the Eagles fell to the Crusaders for the fourth time this season.

With the game tied in the bottom of the seventh, Kaycee Dexter hit a shallow fly ball to right, but the ball landed about six inches foul. If that hit were to have landed on the chalk line, Avila would have gone to their third straight Heart Championship game.

After Evangel scored four runs in the top of the fourth, knocking Avila's Kayleigh Behymer out of the game, the Eagles' offense came alive with four runs of their own. All four runs came with two outs, with Hayden Roberts driving in Kaycee Dexter for Avila's first run. Megan Manestar followed Roberts' double with one of her own to make it a 4-2 game. After McKenzie Sokolaski reached on an Evangel error, Abby King doubled home a pair to tie the game at four.

Samantha Dexter led the Eagles with three hits, while Hayden Roberts added a pair of hits and an RBI in the loss.
