Dom the Eagle was created in 2000, and was named in honor of Sister Ann Dominic Tassone. Sister Ann was an avid sports fan, and rarely ever missed an Avila home game from the mid-1970s on until her death in 2009. She loved all of Avila's teams, whether it was baseball, basketball, volleyball or soccer, and she was never afraid to share her opinion about the athletes, coaches, or even the officials. Her competitive spirit was second to none in all of her years at Avila, and she was beloved for that. We all know that the term "fan" is short for fanatic, and Sister Ann was just that. While many of Avila's current students and student-athletes never had the chance to meet Sister Ann, if you asked any student from the early 2000s or before, they would say that Sister Ann Dominic was Avila's biggest fan of all time, and that is why Avila's Eagle mascot was nicknamed "Dom" when it was created in the Fall of 2000.
