FOOTBALL FALLS TO STERLING
STERLING, Kan. – Avila football fell to 0-5 on Saturday night with a 29-17 loss at Sterling.
Neither team could get much going offensively in the first half as Sterling held an 8-0 lead as the teams entered halftime.
The Warriors added another touchdown early in the third before Avila found its way on the scoreboard.
Late in the third quarter, Avila used a six-play, 86-yard drive capped by a 46-yard Mecoast Vaughn receiving touchdown from Francisco Beltran to get back in the game. After a Quentin Curtis two-point conversion, Avila made it a one-possession game and trailed 15-8.
After receiving the ball back, Sterling put together a solid touchdown-scoring drive to increase its lead. After an Avila punt, Sterling found the scoreboard again, this time on a long, 52-yard pass play.
The big touchdown catch increased the Warrior lead to 21.
Avila was able to answer back immediately with a 39-yard touchdown rush from Curtis – his eighth point of the game.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Avila trailed 29-15.
Avila turned the ball over on downs on back-to-back possessions and was unable to get back in the game. The Eagles final scoring of the game came on a 14-yard safety with six seconds remaining, finalizing the 29-17 score.
Avila's 407 yards of total offense was its highest total of the season.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday at The Z, taking on Southwestern at 1 PM.
