Avila Topped by Peru State

PERU, Neb. – After their thrilling victory over Missouri Valley to open the 2022 season, Avila (1-1) took on another one of their former Heart of America foes on Saturday night, where the Eagles simply could not overcome some otherworldly offense from Peru State (2-1) in an eventual 110-61 win for the Bobcats.

The result is quite simply a shocking one for the Eagles, who surrendered over 100 points for the first time since November of 2022. And it's not hard to see why: the Bobcats simply could not miss on Saturday evening at home. Peru State made more than half of its three-pointers (54.5%) and nearly two-thirds of its field goal tries (65.6%) – two simply unheard of ratios – en route to an uncharacteristically lopsided win.

SJ Allison opened the scoring with a three-pointer ten seconds in, and that set the Bobcats up beautifully: the home team led for the entire game and the Eagles never were able to tie it up. Donzell Johnson led all players with 23 points on seven made threes even though he recorded literally no other stats; Sayvon Taylor scored 16 off the bench and Jibril Harris had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Eagles started their same starting five as they did in their opener as Avila continues to mix in their many new players into their steady crop of available returners. Dylan Holloman led the Eagles with 14 points and three steals off the bench, and Donte' Simpson scored 10.

Up next for Avila men's basketball is another match against a Heart squad – Benedictine is next on the list this Tuesday, November 8 at 7 PM in Atchison, Kansas. Stay tuned to avilaathletics.com for details on how to watch and follow along.
