KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avila men's soccer (3-12-1, 2-8-1) had its Senior Day spoiled and its faint KCAC Tournament dreams dashed thanks to a shutout at the hands of Tabor (7-6-3, 5-4-2 KCAC) on Saturday afternoon at The Z.
After its important win over Bethany last weekend, Avila men's soccer knew it would have to win each one of their final three games to have a chance to sneak in to the KCAC Tournament in 2023. But Tabor's 4-0 win will eliminate the Eagles from playoff contention and move the Bluejays that much closer to securing a spot for themselves.
There was one key difference in the game on Saturday: Tabor had Ander Bengoetxea on the offensive end, and Avila did not. Bengoetxea has been an auxiliary piece of the Bluejay offense in the past, but this year he's been the centerpiece. Case in point, Saturday's game: Tabor scored four goals, and Bengoetxea was part of all of them, scoring three and assisting on the fourth, Owen Bellamy's first of the season.
Tabor scored twice in each half, and Avila only managed three shots on goal against veteran Bluejay goalkeeper Jesus Rondon, leading the Bluejays to a 4-0 win, a crucial one at this stage of the season.
The game was the last Avila will play at The Z in the 2023 season, marking the final home game for Avila's six seniors, all of whom have been critical parts of the program for many years: Ko 'Oo, Mathew Kelne, Joel Sterling, Sajad Alrubayii, David Kehring and Thomas Mikkelson, all of whom have two more games left as Eagles coming up next week.
Up first, Avila will travel to play one of the KCAC's better teams, Friends, on Wednesday night in Wichita. Kickoff is currently scheduled for 6 PM; as always, you can watch all the action on the KCAC Network.
