LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. – While Avila football was playing on the shared home turf at The Z, the men's soccer program went east for its home opener, taking on Northwestern at the Paragon Star Sports Complex, ultimately falling 3-0 due in part to two late goals from the Raiders.
Avila was only able to put together six shot attempts in the 90 minutes, compared to 22 from Northwestern.
Avila goalkeeper Harrison Ennis made six big saves while facing the aforementioned 22 shots in addition to eight corner kicks from Northwestern.
The Raiders struck first in the 34th minute and held on to the 1-0 lead through halftime before scoring more in quick succession as time wound down.
Northwestern put together back-to-back goals just 20 seconds apart in the 71st minute – the first coming on a penalty kick – to give the visitors the ultimate 3-0 win.
Malcolm Goswell and Mazigh Hamchaaoui led Avila with two shots each in the contest.
Avila will play its first match at The Z on Wednesday at 4 PM against Oklahoma Panhandle State – a string of three-straight matches played on-campus at Avila.
