Scaletty, Rangel Lead Eagles at Cavalier Night Relays
Kansas City, MO – Freshman Matt Scaletty made history on Friday night, becoming the first Eagle to ever win an individual event, and junior Jenna Rangel earned two second place finishes at the Cavalier Night Relays at Johnson County Community College.
Scaletty won the Men's 400-meter dash, posting a time of 52.78 seconds. Of the ten competitors in the 400-meter, Scaletty was the only one to post a time under 53 seconds.
Scaletty ran two other events on Friday night, posting an eighth place finish in the 200-meter and a fourteenth place finish in the 60-meter dash.
Rangel finished in second place in both the women's 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Rangel posted a time of 8.25 seconds in the 60-meter final, 0.33 seconds behind the winner. Rangel posted a time of 27.16 seconds in the 200-meter, finishing just 0.3 seconds behind the winning time.
Avila had six other athletes compete at the Cavalier Night Relays, with Sarah Krig earning a second place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.5 meters, just 0.06 meters behind the overall winner. Krig also earned an eighth place finish in the shot put. Sara Montgomery also competed in multiple events for the Eagles on Friday night, running in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Montgomery earned a sixth place finish in the 200-meter and a seventh place finish in the 400-meter.
Kainon Clark, who competed in both the shot put and weight throw on the men's side, earned a fourth place finish in the shot put and a seventh place finish in the weight throw. Amber Jones, who was competing for the first time for Avila this weekend, competed in the same events as Clark on the women's side. Jones earned a seventh place finish in the weight throw and a thirteenth place finish in the shot put in her first meet with the Eagles.
Will Ennis and Da'Veion Sullivan were also competing for the first time for Avila, with Sullivan earning a twelfth place finish in the men's 60-meter dash, and Ennis finishing in twelfth place in the men's 800-meter race.
The Eagles will return to action on Feb. 6 when they travel back to Jacksonville, Ill. for the Illinois College Invitational. The meet will be the final tune-up for the Eagles before the Heart of America Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, which will take place on Feb. 20 and 21 in Lamoni, Iowa.
