Track Preview: Illinois College Invitational

Kansas City, MO – The Avila University Track & Field team will send 12 athletes to the Illinois College Invitational on Saturday, four more than the Eagles have sent in either of their two other meets this season.

After two events in their inaugural season, the Eagles have gotten many firsts out of the way, including their first individual event win, which came last weekend when freshman sprinter Matt Scaletty won the 400-meter dash at the JCCC Night Relays.

That being said, the Eagles still have plenty of firsts coming this weekend. Avila is set to have athletes compete in multiple events for the first time in competition, including the Mile (Will Ennis, Tiffany Zinn, Mia Rosinski, and Maddie Summerfield) and the Triple-Jump (DaVeion Sullivan). The Eagles will also compete in their first ever relay event, with Jenna Rangel, Sara Montgomery, Sarah Krig, and Jodi Johnson teaming up to run the Women's 4x200 Relay.

Of the 12 athletes that will compete this weekend for Avila, 4 will be competing in their first event as an Eagle. Freshman Jodi Johnson is scheduled to compete in the 60-meter Hurdles, the 200-meter and the 4x200 Relay. The other three athletes competing for the first time will be Tiffany Zinn, Mia Rosinski, and Maddie Summerfield, who will all compete in the Women's Mile.

Matt Scaletty will look to continue his success from the first two events as he competes in the Men's 200-meter and 400-meter. In six total events this season, Scaletty has posted 3 Top-10 finishes, including one 1st place finish.

Jenna Rangel, Avila's most consistent women's runner, will compete in three events this weekend at the Illinois College Invitational. She will run the Women's 200-meter and 400-meter, and she is also part of the first 4x200 Relay team. Rangel has competed in five events this season, finishing no worse than eighth place, including two runner-up finishes.

Kainon Clark and Amber Jones will each compete in the Weight Throw and the Shot Put on Saturday. Senior DaVeion Sullivan will run the Men's 60-meter and 200-meter, along with the triple jump. Sara Montgomery is set to compete in three events as well. Along with the 4x200 Relay, she will run in the Women's 200-meter and 400-meter, and Sarah Krig will join Montgomery in the 4x200 Relay, as well as compete in the Shot Put and High Jump.

Saturday will mark the second time the Eagles will compted at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill. In three weeks, meaning the Eagles should be familiar with the venue.
