CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Facing their second ranked opponent in their first five matches, Avila men's volleyball dropped three tough sets to No. 12 Mount Mercy on Friday, 25-11, 25-12, 25-13.
The Eagles battled valiantly against the 12th-ranked team in the country, keeping it within single digits for the first 17 points of the opening set before Mount Mercy went on a run to wrap the set up.
In the second, Avila held a 2-1 lead and kept the score within one before the hosts went on an 8-2 run to put the second set away.
The Mustangs ran away with set No. 3, with a pair of kills and a service ace to begin a 4-0 lead that would not surrender.
Jake Fogle led the Eagles with 12 assists in the contest and Darren Zheng tallied five digs.
The Eagles are back on the court on Friday, hosting a tri with Hastings and St. Mary-of-the-Woods from Mabee Fieldhouse beginning at 1 PM.
