Webb Leads the Way with Four Wins at Grand View Open

DES MOINES, Iowa. - The men of Avila wrestling competed against some of the best wrestlers in the country this Saturday at the Grand View Open, which featured a stacked field composed not only of members of the NAIA champion Grand View squad, but many other top wrestlers from across all levels of the sport.

Just like last week's Falcon Invite, the Grand View Open was large enough to split into two tiers: the Freshman/Sophomore division and the Open division. In the underclass division, Joshua Martinez earned two wins, albeit by forfeit, and wrestled deep into the consolation bracket at 197. Terrell Carter-Williams (149) and Corey Holmes (184) were the other Eagles with wins.

In the senior division, senior standout Daryus Webb led the team with a sixth-place finish in a stacked 184-pound bracket. Webb won four matches, all of which came via pin and reached the quarterfinal before falling to Grand View standout Isaiah Luellen and wrestling all the way back to the consolation semifinal, where he dropped his second match of the day. The team ended up forfeiting in the fifth-place match, leaving Webb in sixth after an excellent, four-win day.

Elsewhere in the senior division, Logan Johnson (149) won a pair of matches and Gavin Howes (285) won three, including two by pin. Luke Ward (133) and Blake Becker (197) both won one.

Up next, Avila men's wrestling returns to the dual scene with a pair of tough opponents at the CMU Tri-Duals on Wednesday, November 15 in Fayette. The Eagles will face reigning NAIA champions Grand View at 5 PM before taking on hosts Central Methodist at 7 PM. Details on how to watch and follow along have been posted on our website, Avilaathletics.com.
