Webb Named KCAC Men’s Wrestler of the Week

For the second straight week, an Eagle wrestler has been recognized by the conference for his achievements on the Mabee Fieldhouse mat: senior Daryus Webb was named the KCAC Men's Wrestler of the Week for the week of December 11, the conference announced this week, giving Avila its second straight weekly honoree.

It's been a brilliant season so far for Avila's standout senior from St. Louis, and Webb added to that resume with four wins in four attempts at the 2023 Eagle Duals on Saturday at Mabee Fieldhouse. Webb helped the Eagles go 2-2 over their four duals at their third annual mid-December event, including a team win over NAIA Top 20 Baker.

For his part, Webb won all four of his bouts at the 184 weight class, one of just a handful of wrestlers at the Eagle Duals to win every one of their matches. He pinned both Waldorf's Roemelo Hudson and Concordia's Garret Moser in less than 30 seconds each, escaped Missouri Valley's Drake Tipton with a takedown in sudden victory, and handled Baker's Brett Bober in a 20-3 tech fall.

That bout was a hotly anticipated matchup between two Top 15 wrestlers in the weight class, one of the biggest ticket ties in the entire event. Bober was just coming off a nail-biting loss to Ottawa's Braden Anderson while Webb was fresh off his quick win over Hudson before they met up in Avila's second dual of the day. And, honestly, the matchup did not live up to the billing because Webb dominated Bober from the get-go, recording five takedowns over the three periods with the final one coming with about 30 seconds left in regulation, sealing the tech fall win over a ranked opponent and helping the Eagles earn the win over the ranked Wildcats in the dual.

Webb is Avila men's wrestling's second straight winner of the KCAC's weekly honor, following Corey Holmes' award last week. Webb, Holmes and the rest of the Eagles will next return to action in Mabee Fieldhouse on Saturday, January 6 for the 2024 Avila Duals. More details on that event will be announced when they are available.
