MATT INFRANCA TABBED TO LEAD AVILA MEN’S WRESTLING

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A dominant wrestler during his high school and college career and one of the top coaches in the metro area, Avila has hired Matt Infranca as the next men’s wrestling head coach, the school announced today.

Infranca joins the Eagles after a successful six-year stint as the head coach at St. Saint Michael the Archangel (Mo.) High School, where his teams have earned three Missouri state trophies – including the 2026 Class 3 Championship. At SMA, Infranca produced 11 individual state champions and 29 state placers.

“I am very proud to welcome Matt to our Avila family,” said Shawn Summe, Avila’s Vice President of Athletics. “His energy and passion for the sport and his experience and success as a high school and club coach really set him apart. I know he will make a great addition to our athletics staff and I know he is the right person to lead our men’s wrestling program.”

Prior to his time at St. Michael, Infranca founded two club programs, Champion Wrestling Club and MoWest Wrestling Club, helping to turn each into some of the premier clubs in the region.

“I am absolutely excited for this opportunity,” Infranca said. “Avila is a strong up-and-coming program that is on the rise. The support from the administration makes this a unique job in the area and I cannot wait to get started.”

In addition to his club responsibilities, Infranca also held coaching positions at Blue Springs High School and his alma mater, Oak Grove High School.

Infranca has coached numerous student-athletes who became standouts collegiately, with more than 25 USA Wrestling All-Americans, six USA Wrestling national champions, three NCAA All-Americans, two NAIA All-Americans and one NAIA national champion.

A standout wrestler himself, Infranca dominated Missouri state wrestling in the early 1990s, winning four state titles and finishing his career with a 143-4 record. He became the first four-time Missouri state champion and the first in nearly 50 years. Collegiately, he wrestled at the University of Nebraska and the University of Missouri and earned four USA Wrestling All-American honors.
