Wood Named KCAC Player of the Week

Following the best week of her career that helped lead her team to a near-perfect start to conference play, Avila senior outfielder Ka'Zem Wood was named the KCAC Softball Player of the Week for the week of March 25-31, the conference announced this week. Wood becomes the fourth Eagle to win a weekly award from the league this season, and the second in a row.

Ka'Zem Wood is on a torrid stretch at the plate and authored the best week of her Eagle career to lead Avila to three victories and an 11-1 start to conference play. In four games over two KCAC doubleheaders last week, Wood produced nine hits, drove in eight runs and scored another seven. Her slash line was a stellar .692/.692/1.151 (average/on-base/slugging), and she was tops in the team in all six of those departments last week.

That line was highlighted by a 4-for-5 performance in game two against Southwestern last Wednesday where Wood doubled, homered, drove in five runs and crossed home plate three times. Her homer was an inside-the-parker that kickstarted the Eagle offense in the game. Over the weekend, she started the doubleheader against Sterling by going 2-for-3 with a double, scoring two critical runs in what became a two-run win for the Eagles over the Warriors.

And last week was just the latest in what's been a stellar month for the senior from Palestine, Texas. In the Eagles' ten games, all against conference foes, in March since they returned from California, Wood led the team with 18 hits and 16 RBI. She sported a slash line of .529/.556/.853 – the only Eagle ahead of her in all three of those categories was Brooke Belflower, who was last week's KCAC Player of the Week.

Those two hitters now give the Eagles a total of four KCAC award winners so far this season, joining sophomores Stephanie Hayes (player) and McKayla Cotton (pitcher).

Wood and the rest of the Eagles will next hit the road for a KCAC doubleheader this Saturday, March 6 against McPherson. Action is currently set to begin at noon; as always, you can watch all the action on the KCAC Network.
