KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avila softball faced a tall task on Tuesday afternoon as they played a doubleheader against No. 21 Evangel, losing both games 6-0 and 5-2.
The opening game of the day saw Avila face one of the NAIA's top pitchers in Maddy Meierer. Meierer was able to shut Avila's offense down, allowing just four baserunners all game.
Evangel opened their scoring with a two-RBI double in the third inning. The Valor put up a four-run sixth inning on an RBI double, single and triple.
Avila's bats were unable to answer as the Eagles dropped game one, 6-0.
The second game of the doubleheader was a tighter affair, but one that went Evangel's way thanks to more strong starting pitching.
Avila's lone runs of the day came on a seventh inning two-out two-run home run by Abi Beaman, marking her second home run in the last three days.
Evangel scored two runs in the third and two more in the fifth inning. The Valor closed their scoring on the day with a big solo home run in the sixth inning to wrap up the 5-2 victory.
The Eagles will look to bounce back Saturday as they head to Salina for a doubleheader with Kansas Wesleyan beginning at 12 PM.
