WOMEN’S BASKETBALL’S WINNING STREAK ENDS AT THREE

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Turnovers and second-chance points given up doomed Avila women's basketball on Wednesday night, losing to St. Mary, 86-75.

Both teams played a close first half with the Eagles trailing by just four entering the break.

Avila held a lead late in the second quarter, but St. Mary ended the half on a three-pointer and would not look back from there.

The Eagles shot just 33.3 percent in the third quarter while the Spires extended their lead to six Avila was unable to overcome the St. Mary lead before ultimately falling and snapping the program's three-game winning streak.

Avila turned the ball over 13 times in the game and gave up 15 second-chance points.

However, as a team, Avila shot nearly 50 percent from the field and were led by a 20-point, eight-rebound performance from Madilyn Melton. Four of Avila's five starters scored in double-figures. 

Avila will head into Christmas break following a matchup with Tabor at Mabee Fieldhouse on Saturday at 1 PM.
