DYSON GETS FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE AS AVILA WINS SECOND-STRAIGHT
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avila women's basketball picked up back-to-back wins with a hard-fought 78-66 victory over York on Wednesday night from Mabee Fieldhouse.
One game after hitting 30, the Eagles knocked down 27 shots from the foul line en route to the 12-point win. Avila had five scorers in double-figures in the contest, including a career-high 11 from freshman Ava Hughes.
Another freshman had a career day as Talia Dyson notched her first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The smallest player on the court was the lone player with double-digit rebounds.
Avila got off to a strong start in the first half, outscoring York in both quarters and entering halftime with a 38-32 lead.
After trailing 8-6 four minutes into the first quarter, Dyson knocked down a three-pointer to go up by one and the Eagles would not look back, leading for the remainder of the contest.
York tried a comeback in the third quarter and the Panthers entered the fourth trailing by just two. Avila would start the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run to put the game on ice.
Dyson and Hughes were joined in the double-figure scoring column by Marlie Wright's game-high 23, Madilyn Melton with 12 and Kylee Comstock with 11. In total, freshman accounted for 36 of Avila's 78 total points.
The Eagles won the game on the glass, outrebounding the Panthers 40-27.
With the win tonight, Avila has already surpassed last season's win total with still 10 games remaining.
