WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PUTS UP HIGHEST SCORING OUTPUT SINCE 2009 IN BLOWOUT OVER KANSAS CHRISTIAN
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Continuing their red-hot week, Avila women's basketball dominated Kansas Christian on Friday night, defeating the Falcons 108-50 and stretching their winning streak to three, the second three-game win streak of the season.
The 108 points are the program's highest total since November 2009.
During the winning streak, the Eagles are averaging 89.6 points per game and have a +102 scoring differential.
After trailing 3-2 less than a minute into the game, Avila led for the final 38:15 of the contest in dominating fashion.
The Eagles held the Falcons to just five first-quarter points and outscored their opponents by 20 in the opening 20 minutes and outscored Kansas Christian by 21 more points in the second.
Avila held a 39-point led entering halftime and would only increase their advantage in the second half.
For the second time in three games, all nine Avila players made at least one field goal in the contest and the Eagles had a number of notable individual performances.
With 10 points and 10 rebounds, freshman Ava Hughes recorded her first collegiate double-double. The first-year player from Herman, Mo., has a double-figure scoring effort in back-to-back games. Additionally, Hughes' effort marked the second-straight game in which an Avila freshman recorded her first collegiate double-double, after Talia Dyson's performance on Wednesday.
Dyson had another solid game, putting up 16 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. It is Dyson's sixth double-digit scoring game of her career.
Joining Hughes in the double-double category was Marlie Wright, who recorded 19 points and 11 assists in just 22 minutes of action. Wright added six boards and three steals to her statline.
Leading all scorers was senior Madilyn Melton, who dropped 20 points and seven rebounds.
Kathleen Stanley was on fire from behind the arc, hitting five shots from deep for 17 total points.
With 12 steals, Avila now has three-straight games with double-digit steals as a team.
The Eagles notched a trio team-highs during the Remy Wolfe era tonight: 12 blocked shots, 35 assists and an astounding 63.4 percent field goal percentage.
Avila will look to win its fourth-straight game on Monday night, back in KCAC action. The Eagles will host Southwestern from Mabee Fieldhouse at 5:30 PM.
