LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – For the sixth time in the last eight games, Avila women's soccer picked up a tie, drawing 1-1 at Saint Mary on Wednesday.
The Spires recorded their lone goal of the afternoon in the fifth minute to take an early lead. The early goal was the only score of the first half as the teams entered halftime with the home team leading 1-0.
Annika Holtorf got Avila on the board in the 59th minute off a penalty kick opportunity. The senior buried the shot from the spot for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Avila had just seven total shot attempts in the match – with six coming in the second half – but could not register a goal in open play.
Freshman goalkeeper Shae Sweeney kept Avila in the game, saving six shots.
Saint Mary recorded more shots (18-7) and more corner kicks (7-2) than Avila, while Sweeney's seven saves were one more than Saint Mary's keeper.
