Yates Qualifies for Nationals at Missouri Intercollegiate
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Despite not completing the meet because of the weather, the Avila Eagles track and field teams still managed to have some success this weekend at the Missouri Intercollegiate meet.
Sophomore Shyrelle Yates punched her ticket to the NAIA National Championships in the triple jump with a leap of 11.21m. This will be the second consecutive indoor the season that Yates will be participating at the NAIA National Championships which will be held on February 28 - March 3 in Brookings, South Dakota.
Helen Thames had a great day as well by capturing first place in the 600m run with a time of 1:39.07. Thames broke her own school record and her time was only a few tenths of a second away from the NAIA "B" standard qualifying time. Alyssa Sipes threw a season best throw of 12.97m in the weight throw which was just shy of her personal best.
Darien Minor highlighted the men's team by setting a career best in the high jump with a mark of 1.86m.
Weather permitting, both teams will be back in action next Saturday at the Northwest Missouri Open in Maryville, Mo. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
