Volleyball Swept by (RV) OKWU
BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Avila volleyball made the trip out to Oklahoma to face (RV) Oklahoma Wesleyan, one of the top offensive teams in the KCAC, on Wednesday night, and the Eagles from Oklahoma (13-4, 1-1 KCAC) lived up to the billing as one of the league's best squads, taking down the Eagles from Kansas City (3-10, 0-3 KCAC) in straight sets.
Oklahoma Wesleyan has put together some impressive offensive numbers, both individually and as a team, this season, and that prowess was on full display on Wednesday. A somewhat shorthanded Avila offense simply could not match the power of the OKWU attack: even though both teams recorded four blocks, Avila finished with a team hitting percentage of exactly .000 (20 kills/20 errors) compared to Oklahoma Wesleyan's .264.
The home team got off to a torrid start in the match which proved to be a prelude for the rest of the contest: OKWU started strong in all three sets and never let Avila establish a foothold. Avila's high for points in a set was 15 as Oklahoma Wesleyan cruised to victory.
Top OKWU outside dominated, as she has in just about every match this season, with 18 kills on 30 swings (.533 attack percentage) in just three sets. Middles Tijana Stojilkovic and Maddy McKinney combined for 14 kills and one error. Maddie Jones led Avila with nine kills; Abigail Blake led all players with 14 digs.
Up next, Avila volleyball will return home to Mabee Fieldhouse to play their second home game of the 2023 season this Saturday, September 30, part of Avila's 2023 Homecoming Week festivities. First serve between Avila and York is slated for 7 PM; as always, you can watch all the action live and for free on the Avila Sports Network with Max Williams on the call from Kansas City.
