POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – After splitting two matches on Friday, Avila volleyball dropped two closely-contested matches on the second day of the College of the Ozarks Labor Day Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Facing Mid-America Christian in the early game, Avila kept it close late in the first set after being down by as many as six points, ultimately dropping the set, 25-21. Ten total kills from Maddie Jones were not enough as Avila hit .179 on the day compared to Mid-America Christian's .292, who won the match in straight sets.
Avila looked to bounce back an hour later, facing Stephens.
Trailing by as many as seven points in the first set on two occasions, the Eagles fought back to keep it within three until an attack error gave Stephens the first set.
The Eagles once again battled in the second set after an early Stephens lead, but would again drop the second set, 25-23.
Two service aces from Makinley Scholl and 15 digs from Sophia Giogio were not enough as Stephens took all three sets. Avila heads back to Kansas City 1-3 in the Labor Day Tournament before next Saturday's home opener at Mabee Fieldhouse against Briar Cliff (1 PM) and Peru State (5 PM).
