UNDERCLASSMEN SHINE AT WARRIOR WOMEN’S OPEN
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Competing in one of the largest events of the season, Avila women's wrestling's performance at the Indiana Tech Warrior Open was highlighted by underclassmen, including three who finished in first in the "hard-luck" division."
With nearly 40 teams competing, the Warrior Open utilizes a hard-luck bracket to get athletes as many matches as possible.
Freshman Jennifer Lopez-Alvarado (124-2, hard luck freshman/sophomore), Louise Eskina (180, hard luck freshman/sophomore) and Suzette Mendez (110, hard luck freshman/sophomore) were Avila's first-place finishers over the weekend.
Lopez Alvarado notched three victories, while Eskina and Mendez recorded two each.
In the hard luck freshman/sophomore division, Rihanna Ricks, with two wins, was the Eagles other placer.
In the open division, Amitria McNack (two wins) and Kylee Whalen (three wins) each finished No. 6 in their classes, while Alexis Hatfield recorded two victories and placed seventh.
In the hard-luck open, Joshyonna Coppage-Dortch placed second in the hard-luck open division.

The Eagles are back on their home mat on Thursday, taking on Ottawa and honoring the program's seniors at 7 PM.
