BASEBALL DROPS FINAL TWO IN TEXAS

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – After a split on Friday, Avila baseball lost both games of Saturday's doubleheader to Nelson, 12-10 and 14-6.

The Eagles first eight batters reached in Game 1. Two doubles and five singles saw Avila put up eight runs in the top of the first inning.

A second-inning sacrifice fly from Paxton Andrade and a fifth-inning RBI double from Jack Virden gave Avila a 10-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth.

Nelson would send 12 runs across the plate in their final two innings, capped by a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to settle the eventual 12-10 scoreline.

Virden went 2-4 in the first game with three RBI. Avila drew five walks as a team in the seven innings. Eight different Eagles recorded a hit, including three players with multiple base knocks.

The second game didn't go Avila's way. Six Avila runs were not enough as Nelson would put up seven in the second inning, four in the third and three more in the fifth.

After a Tyler King walk in the second, Thomas English sent a ball over the wall for a two-run homer to give Avila an early lead.

Nelson's offensive performance gave them the victory, putting up 14 runs in three big innings.

Virden had another big offensive showing in the second game, blasting a three-run shot in the sixth. He went 4-11 in the four games to open up the season with five RBI and three runs scored.

Avila has its home opener on Tuesday afternoon against Kansas Christian. First pitch from The Z is at 2 PM.
