EAGLES PUT UP 29 TOTAL RUNS, SWEEP YORK
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The highest-scoring single-day performance in nearly 11 months, Avila baseball put up 29 total runs in a two-game sweep of York on Tuesday at The Z, winning 18-2 and 11-8.
The 29 runs are Avila's highest single-day total since they put up 24 against Southwestern on April 17, 2024.
In game one, all 18 Eagle runs came in the third through sixth innings, highlighted by an 11-run sixth.
The scoring opened up for Avila in the bottom of the third with a three-run Jack Virden home run. That was just the tip of the iceberg.
After two runs scored on an error in the fourth, Tyler King blasted a two-run shot over the right field wall in the fifth.
The sixth inning is where 15 Eagles came to the plate and 11 runs scored.
The first eight Avila batters reached base and the ninth collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly. The Eagles notched two bases-loaded walks and a hit by pitch with the bags full to account for the first three runs.
The inning was highlighted by a two-out, two-run single by Landon Vahle, followed up by the next batter – Ricky Dober – smashing a three-run home run to right field.
In game No. 1, Zach Dillman, Dober and Emmanuel Ealey – as a pinch runner – scored three runs each. Dober and Virden had four RBI each, while King and Vahle had two RBI of their own.
Pulling double duty, Dillman pitched 4.1 stellar innings on the mound, allowing just two earned runs. Out of the pen, Cody Rohrbough and Corbin Hamman closed the door with 2.2 innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit total.
Avila's 18 hits in game number one came from five players, including four who had two or more base knocks in the game. Eight different Eagles scored a run in the game, which set the table for another high-scoring game in the second part of the doubleheader.
York's offense put up much more of a fight in game number two, holding an 8-4 lead after the top of the second.
The Panthers scored a run in the first and seven in the second. The Panthers' seven-run second saw a two-run home run and a grand slam sandwiching a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
After the second inning, York's bats would go quiet.
Avila had a big first inning and Jack Virden had another big game.
In the first, Virden opened Avila's scoring with a two-run single and would come around to score on a Thomas English sac fly on the next batter. Virden got to third after stealing second and advancing the extra base on a throwing error by the catcher, which also scored Dober from third.
The Eagles answered York's seven-run second with five of their own to take the lead after two.
The bottom of the second started with a lot of pings off the bat: triple, RBI triple, RBI double, RBI single, throwing error by the York shortstop, RBI single. Eight batters, five runs. 9-8 lead after two.
Two more RBI doubles in the fourth by Vahle and Virden gave Avila their 11th runs of the game to seal the victory.
Dillman and Vahle finished the second game with three runs each, while Virden led the team with three RBI in game No. 2.
Seven of the nine Avila starters recorded a hit, while six of the nine scored a run.
On the bump in relief, Aidan Johnson threw 4.2 two-run innings and Jackson Foster came on for the save in the seventh, throwing a hitless inning to secure the win.
In total on Tuesday, Avila's two through five hitters went 15-29 with 19 runs scored and 16 RBI.
Zach Dillman: 3-7, six runs scored, one RBI.
Landon Vahle: 3-7, five runs, three RBI.
Ricky Dober: 4-7, five runs, five RBI.
Jack Virden: 5-8, three runs, seven RBI.
Avila will be back at The Z for three games against Oklahoma Wesleyan this weekend, beginning with a 1 PM first pitch on Friday.
