BASEBALL DROPS ONE TO SOUTHWESTERN, WINS SEASON SERIES
WINFIELD, Kan. – A low-scoring game saw Avila baseball drop its final matchup of the season with Southwestern on Tuesday, 5-1. Despite the loss, the Eagles still won the season series over the Moundbuilders, 2-1.
Both teams received strong pitching throughout the contest, with Avila's Thomas Ringer throwing 5.2 innings and allowing just three runs while striking out five Southwestern batters.
The Moundbuilders started the scoring in the sixth inning on back-to-back hits: an RBI triple followed up with a two-run home run. Those two pitches produced all three earned runs on Ringer's line for the day.
Avila attempted a comeback in the eight after a Will Clark RBI double to score Travis Curry, but Southwestern added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on another two-run home run.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Eagles had the bases loaded with two outs. With the tying run at the plate, Avila was unable to convert, falling to the Moundbuilders, 5-1.
Ricky Dober (three) and Zach Dillman (two) were the biggest producers for Avila in the game as the only two with multiple hits in the contest.
Avila has a week off from competition before returning to the field on April 23 at The Z against Saint Mary at 2 PM.
