SALINA, Kan. – Wrapping up the regular season against conference-rival Kansas Wesleyan, Avila baseball took two close losses on Saturday as the team prepares for the KCAC Tournament in Joplin, Mo., next week. Avila fell 8-4 in game one and 4-0 in the second end of the doubleheader.
Avila began the scoring in the second inning of the opening game with a two-run Jack Virden home run to right field.
The Coyotes would answer back in the third inning with two runs of their own. In the top of the fourth, JJ Stubblefield scored Ricky Dober with an RBI single up the middle. Through four, Avila held a 3-2 lead.
Avila missed an opportunity to score in the fifth. With two runners on base, Dober was thrown out at home for the final out of the inning attempting to score on a Landon Vahle single.
KWU made Avila pay for the mistake in the bottom of the inning with a three-run home run to give the Coyotes a 5-3 lead.
Kansas Wesleyan put up another run in the sixth and Avila would score their fourth run in the eighth inning courtesy of a Gio Armas RBI single.
A second KWU home run in the eighth put the game out of reach for Avila as the Coyotes wrapped up the 8-4 victory.
Avila's nine hits on the day were not enough to take the victory away from Kansas Wesleyan, but the Eagles had another opportunity in the second end of the doubleheader.
In game number two, strong starting pitching form Zach Dillman helped Avila. Dillman tossed three innings, allowing just one run.
KWU got on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the third inning and would add two more in the fourth inning. The Coyotes scored their fourth run off of a wild pitch in the sixth inning.
Avila's offense was unable to put much together in the second game, with their lone hit of the game coming in the top of the seventh.
The Eagles will open up the KCAC Tournament on Wednesday from Joplin, Mo. More information on seeding and opponents will be announced this weekend.
