McPherson
MCPHERSON, Kan. – Avila baseball heads back to Kansas City with two losses to McPherson on Saturday, 8-5 and 10-2.
The first game saw a solid offensive performance from the Eagles, especially late.
Avila was in an early hole following a three-run bottom of the first from McPherson. The Eagles squad fought back after another Bulldog run in the second and two more in the fourth.
Trailing 6-0 after five, Avila's bats mounted a comeback.
In the sixth inning, Avila had two on base with two outs after singles from Tommy English and Caden Stillwell. Dylan Atherton used his power to get Avila back in the game.
A three-run shot over the right field fence put Avila on the board and cut McPherson's lead in half.
Joey Reichmuth came on to pitch in the bottom of the sixth, keeping the Bulldogs off the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh innings, giving Avila a shot at a bigger comeback.
With just four outs remaining, Will Clark came to bat in the top of the eighth. A pair of singles from Stillwell and Reichmuth opened the inning, with Clark bringing Stillwell home on a sac fly.
A two-out single from McPherson in the bottom half negated Avila's run in the top half. Avila trailed 8-4 entering the ninth.
Again with two outs, Avila added a run in the ninth on an RBI fielder's choice, scoring JJ Stubblefield.
That was all the offense Avila could manage in the ninth, falling to McPherson, 8-5.
English and Stillwell each reached base three times in the contest, while Atherton's three-run homer made his three RBI a team-high.
McPherson had a big first inning in the second game, and Avila was unable to recover.
The Bulldogs put up four in the bottom of the first, with the ball leacing the infield only once on the four run-scoring plays.
McPherson added two more in the fourth and four additional runs in the sixth to put Avila away.
The pair of Eagles runs came on RBI from Stillwell and English.
Bryce Bushelle had another strong appearance out of the bullpen, tossing 1.2 shutout innings.
Avila will play a single game at St. Mary on Wednesday before returning to The Z for three games versus Sterling on Friday and Saturday. First pitch on Friday is slated for 2 PM.
