KANSAS CITY, Mo. – On by far the hottest day of 2026, Avila baseball duked out a split with York on Saturday, losing 9-5 before taking the second, 13-9.
A five-day stretch in Kansas City saw an 80-degree temperature swing, as both programs were dealing with the elements.
Avila held an early 5-0 lead in the opener before York stormed back.
The Eagles put up four in the fourth and fifth innings on a sac fly from Caden Stillwell, a two-RBI single from Diego Solis and a two-run home run from Isaiah Ramos to lead 5-0.
Avila got seven strong innings on the mound from Antonio Villalobos IV, striking out seven while allowing just one earned run.
York would put up nine unanswered runs beginning in the seventh, including an eight-run eighth inning, highlighted by a pair of home runs as the Panthers took the opener, 9-5.
The second end of the doubleheader went much better for the Eagles.
Avila put up three in the first on a sac fly from Joey Reichmuth and RBI singles each from Dylan Atherton and Nick Bowers.
Three runs from York tied it in the top of the second, but Avila answered right back with four in the bottom half, including a two-RBI double from JJ Stubblefield.
Three-straight from York in the third and fourth tied the game at seven before Avila took control in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run from Reichmuth to take a lead they would not give back.
The Eagles added four more insurance runs on a two-run home run and a two-RBI single, both from Tommy English in the fifth and sixth innings to go up 13-8.
York would get one in the seventh, but a three-inning save from Corbin Hamman shut the door on the Panthers as Avila took the 13-9 victory.
The deciding game will be on Sunday as York and Avila face off at The Z at 12 PM.
