SALINA, Kan. – Avila softball stretched its winning streak to six games in a doubleheader split with Kansas Wesleyan on Wednesday, winning 8-5 before losing, 5-3.
The opening game needed extra innings to decide the winner.
Avila got on the board first in the third inning thanks to a two-RBI single from senior third baseman Stephanie Hayes. KWU cut the lead in half the following inning with a solo shot, the first earned run back-to-back KCAC Pitcher of the Week winner McKayla Cotton has given up in more than a week.
In the fifth, Abi Beaman scored Maya Richards with an RBI double before the Coyotes got a pair back in the bottom half on a two-RBI double to tie the game at 3-3.
Jaka Sharp scored Addison Hassett in the sixth on another RBI double and KWU tied it right back up in the bottom half.
Through six, the KCAC rivals were knotted up at 4-4.
A scoreless seventh inning sent the teams to the eighth.
With an automatic runner placed on second base to begin extra innings, each team scored once to send the teams to the ninth.
In the top of the ninth, Beaman notched her second RBI double of the game and Avila would score two more later in the ninth on a throwing error by the Kansas Wesleyan catcher to go up 8-5.
A 1-2-3 inning from Faith Heaster capped her three innings on the rubber, allowing just one unearned run. Beaman and Hayes each led the Eagles with a two RBI in the opener.
The second game, the Coyotes put up a four-spot in the bottom of the first inning and the Eagles were unable to overcome the early deficit.
Cotton drove in one in the top of the first, Beaman (third inning) and Hayes (fifth) each drove in runs in the later innings for their third RBI of the day.
Avila left seven runners on base in the second end of the doubleheader, and were unable to piece together a few extra hits to sweep the doubleheader, ending the program's winning streak at six games.
The Eagles (16-11, 5-1) will look to begin a new winning streak on Saturday at The Z against Tabor beginning at 12 PM.
