CHARLIE KENNEDY RECORDS WIN NO. 700 IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF TABOR

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avila head coach Charlie Kennedy recorded wins No. 699 and 700 in Avila softball's doubleheader sweep of Tabor on Saturday, 4-1 and 9-1.

Kennedy, coaching in his fifth season at Avila and 25th overall as a collegiate head coach, saw production from up and down his roster in the sweep of the KCAC rivals.

In the opener, two-time reigning KCAC Pitcher of the Week McKayla Cotton threw 7.0 innings, striking out six without allowing an earned run in the quick, 87-minute game.

Cotton allowed just six baserunners in the shutdown performance.

Avila's scoring got started in the first inning with an RBI single from Abi Beaman to go up 1-0.

RBI doubles from Elizabeth Harvey and Beaman in the third inning stretched the lead to 3-0 before Tabor scored one in the fifth.

Cotton wrapped up the scoring in the sixth with a sac fly to score Beaman for the third run accounted for in the game as Avila took the opener, 4-1.

The Avila dugout began the second game knowing what was in store for their head coach and they did not want to take a full seven innings to get there.

A run-scoring error and an RBI single from Cotton got the Eagles up to an early 2-0 lead and Sophia Medina would add another in the second, scoring Addison Hassett on an RBI double.

3-0 Avila after two.

Tabor's lone run of the game came in the fourth inning as it was a dominating performance from Faith Heaster in the circle.

The sophomore tossed 6.0 innings, striking out three and allowing just one run, keeping the Bluejays at bay.

The Eagles would follow Heaster's lead and run rule it in the sixth.

An error and a wild pitch scored a pair of Avila baserunners in the bottom of the sixth to go up 5-1.

A sacrifice fly from pinch-hitter Carlee Shelter and a run driven in from Laila Rueda grew the lead to 7-1.

Jaka Sharp came around to score on a stolen base and Neveah Chrisco walked it off with an RBI single to give the Eagles the win and Kennedy his 700th career victory.

Ten different Eagles scored at least one run across the two games and the Eagles have now won eight of their last nine games as they sit 18-11 overall and 7-1 in the KCAC.

Kennedy and Avila softball will begin the quest for 800 on Tuesday for two games at Saint Mary beginning at 2 PM.
