WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL LOSES TO STERLING DESPITE DOMINATING FIRST SET

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In the team's annual Dig Pink game, Avila women's volleyball put up a strong first set on Friday against Sterling before ultimately falling to the Warriors in four sets.

Avila used five services aces in the first set – Da'Mya Dickson with three, Megan Davies and Sydney Martin with one each – to take the first frame 25-16.

The Eagles never trailed in the opening set and put up 13 kills in addition to the five services aces to enter the second with a 1-0 lead.

Sterling immediately grabbed momentum in the second set, controlling the set throughout, 25-8.

The third set was a tight affair with Avila holding an early four-point lead before a run by the Warriors. After taking the lead at 14-13, Sterling never looked back, winning 25-21.

The fourth set was another back-and-forth matchup with Avila once again holding on to an early lead before a run from Sterling took the momentum.

With a 10-10 tie, Sterling went on a 4-0 run followed by a 6-0 run from Avila. Once the Warriors got the score knotted up at 18-18, they once again would not look back, taking the fourth and final set, 25-19.

Dickson's four services aces were the second-highest total of her young career, while her 17 assists gave her a three-game streak of 15 or more.

Avila's homestand continues with the Eagles taking on the Moundbuilders of Southwestern on Wednesday evening at 6:30 at Mabee Fieldhouse.
