WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO SAINT MARY IN FOUR

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avila women's volleyball's losing streak grew on Wednesday night at Mabee Fieldhouse, falling to Saint Mary, 3-1.

Both teams got off to a sluggish start before the Spires took the first two sets with ease, 25-16 and 25-18, before Avila came back in the third set.

Avila got off on the right foot in the third, picking up the first three points. The Eagles would hold a lead for the majority of the set, but the Spires would not go away.

The two teams battled back and forth for the length of the third set as neither team held a lead of more than three.

Avila grew its lead to 20-17 late in the frame as it looked like the Eagles had the set wrapped up. As was the case for the entirety of the set, St. Mary battled back.

USM eventually took a 22-21 lead and had two set points before Avila wrapped up the set on a 3-0 run, winning in extras, 27-25.

The Spires put the game away in the fourth set. After giving up the first two points, Saint Mary went on a 4-0 run and would not trail for the remainder, taking the final set, 25-14 to secure the 3-1 match victory.

Sydney Owens recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 19 digs. Megan Davies was the other Eagle with double-digit kills (12).

Da'Mya Dickson (15) and Sydney Martin (16) recorded double-figure assists while Sophia Giorgio (20) sixth game with 20 or more digs and third-straight.

With four games remaining on the regular season schedule, Avila will hit the road for games at McPherson on Saturday and Oklahoma Wesleyan next Wednesday before returning to Mabee Fieldhouse for Senior Day on November 1 against Kansas Wesleyan.
